House key duplication in Denver: what to check

    By Fast Fix Locksmith

A working spare begins with the right key blank and a correctly cut original. Some standard keys can be duplicated at a hardware counter; other systems require a particular blank, machine or permission from the system administrator. Availability depends on the specific key and lock.

    Check the original key

If your key bends, sticks or only operates after you jiggle it, have the key and lock checked before making copies. A copy of a worn original may reproduce the wear. Bring a working key if you have one and describe the door it serves. If no key is available, ask about the options for the specific lock rather than assuming a copy can be made from memory.

    Restricted systems and authorization

A 'Do Not Duplicate' stamp by itself does not establish a patented or restricted keyway; the actual system and applicable policies determine what copies can be made. Some key systems use controlled blanks and require authorization from the owner or administrator. If your key serves a rental, office or shared building, ask the authorized manager how to obtain a spare. A locksmith can check whether the blank and authorization are available, but cannot promise to copy every restricted key.

    Before you order copies

Confirm how many keys you need, who may receive them and whether the lock should instead be rekeyed because old keys are unaccounted for. Test new keys in the intended lock without forcing them. Ask what key blanks, cutting and any on-site work cost before approving the job. See residential locksmith services or call (720) 710-3141 during 6 AM–11 PM daily.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 'Do Not Duplicate' stamp always mean a patented key?

No. The stamp alone does not identify the keyway or its restrictions; the actual system and authorization should be checked.

Can every worn key be copied reliably?

No. A worn original may yield a poor copy. Have the key and lock checked before ordering duplicates.
